How to Play Sudoku

Sudoku is a logic puzzle played on a 9×9 grid. The grid is divided into nine smaller 3×3 boxes. Some numbers are already provided when the puzzle begins.

Your job is to fill every empty square with a number from 1 to 9 while following three simple rules.

Sudoku Rules

The numbers already shown at the beginning of the puzzle are fixed and cannot be changed.

Easy, Medium and Hard Sudoku

Easy Sudoku begins with more numbers already filled in, giving you more information to work with.

Medium Sudoku removes more starting numbers and requires additional deduction. Hard Sudoku provides fewer clues and is intended for players who want a greater challenge.

What Are Sudoku Notes?

Notes, sometimes called pencil marks, let you record possible numbers for an empty square without committing to an answer. Select Notes, choose a square and tap any possible numbers.

When you become confident about the answer, turn Notes off and enter the full-sized number.

Sudoku Tips

Start by looking for rows, columns or 3×3 boxes that already contain many numbers. Work out which numbers are missing and use the intersecting rows and columns to eliminate impossible choices.

If several answers appear possible, use notes rather than guessing. Sudoku puzzles are solved through deduction: every square has a correct value that can be determined from the surrounding grid.

Is Sudoku a Maths Game?

Sudoku uses numbers, but it does not require arithmetic. You never need to add, subtract, multiply or divide. The digits simply act as nine different symbols, making Sudoku a game of logic and pattern recognition rather than calculation.
